Boston under the snow

Last week, a huge snow storm hit Boston. As if we were kids, we were so happy about the city being covered by snow, so we went out and enjoyed a long walk. I gathered a bunch of pics of that event we have been waiting for one year since we arrived in Boston.

Before / During the storm

The storm was coming soon, I took some pictures around Kenmore and the Charles river. Then I took the same pictures after the storm has been hitting the city for just an afternoon. It gives a good way to see how the city was about to change.

After the storm… A new city!

It is crazy to discover Boston covered by this thick white coat! So we put our best cold clothes so that we can crawl into the snow and start our journey. No car is the city, there is a ban. I love it, the city is full of people walking around the empty avenues and taking pictures of the snow. It looks like a holiday! We do the same tour as we do when friends come to visit us : Marlborough Street in Back Bay, Common garden, Beacon Hill – barely recognizable – and the downtown. After 4h of walk, we have seen as much snow as we want to. So we go back to Kenmore and end up in one of our favorite bar Eastern Standard – the terrace is full of snow ! – and try for the first time the burger. Best day ever!

Outdoor sculptures

The storm has been a good occasion to refresh street art in Boston, where the statues of local or national heroes look so serious in many city parks. Many snowmen sprung everywhere in the city and I must say that their happy faces gave a festive air to Boston.

How to move around the city

I know that american people are very pragmatic, but still, I was surprised when skiers passed us on the road side. In fact, I was jealous, it looked so cool, particularly because my bike was literally under the snow and I had no way to move around the city! We also saw snowboardeurs in the middle of avenues or people sleighing on one of the slope of the Common garden.

Fighting the snow

While we were having fun in the snow, some devoted people and city workers were having a hard time clearing it. BU blog has even made an article about these local heroes. We’ve seen so many different small and big machines to remove the snow from the streets and avenues!

Sadly we didn’t see any snow clearing train, which looks awesome!
